Introduction to Fencing Classes

We are resuming our Introduction to Fencing classes starting in March, 2021.

Introduction to Fencing

Our approach to try to convey the rich complexity and depth of fun that this sport can offer is to have an introductory COURSE, rather than a single class. Our Introductory courses are six-week courses, meeting for 90 minutes weekly, and are open to fencers ages 10 to adult.

We offer two sequential courses, Intro to Fencing 1 and Intro to Fencing 2. Details are below.

Prior to attending any in-person classes, students (and parents if students are under 18) are required to attend on online orientation session. The orientation session covers our COVID-19 era procedures, policies, and expectations.

Intro to Fencing 1

Our gateway course, this course is designed for students new to the sport of fencing. This mixed ages class is appropriate for students aged 10 years to adult. This course meets six times in person, and may have additional practice/review days added (at no additional cost) if the calendar permits.

Our goal is that by the end of the course, students will have a reasonably broad exposure to many of the key elements of fencing: techniques, tactics, etiquette, history, and officiating. Students are expected to attend all class meetings, as each day builds on the previous day's material.

All fencing equipment is provided and included in the cost of the course.

Class size is limited to 8 fencers.

This class is offered twice each season: in the Sep-Oct and Mar-Apr sessions.

Prerequisites:

  • Must attend an online orientation session prior to in-person attendance

  • Fencer must be 10 years or older before conclusion of course

  • Must be willing to have fun!

Scheduled Class Meetings and Online Orientation Sessions:

Our online sessions are run using Google Meet.

  • Sep-Oct 2021 session details TBA.

Course fee: $175.00.

  • The Riverside Fencing Club membership requirement is waived for this course.

Registration is now closed.

Intro to Fencing 2

Our follow-up to the Intro 1 course, this course is designed to give students continuing with fencing at Riverside further grounding in the fundamentals and the instructional modes used at Riverside before joining the more advanced classes. We expand the breadth and depth of techniques and tactics introduced in the Intro 1 course.

Students who have some prior experience/exposure to fencing (whether at a different club or in a past life) are welcome.

This course meets six times in person, and may have additional practice/review days added (at no additional cost) if the calendar permits.

All fencing equipment is provided and included in the cost of the course.

Class size is limited to 12.
